KSU Tribal TAB and Partners Dr. Laurel Smith, from University of Oklahoma, and Loren Waters, a Tulsa-based independent filmmaker and citizen of Cherokee Nation and the Kiowa Tribe, in close collaboration with the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes produced the award-winning documentary short Restoring Néške'emāne. The film showcases Damon Dunbar, Executive Director of Department of Housing for the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes, and his decades' long effort to redevelop the Concho Indian Boarding School and features Cheyenne Chief Gordon Yellowman and Cheyenne and Arapaho Brownfields Coordinator, Chieko Buffalo. By highlighting themes that are very relevant to indigenous communities, including intergenerational trauma, colonialism, community collaboration, resilience and healing, and Indigenous futurism, Restoring Néške'emāne demonstrates how these themes not only shape community vision, but also emphasizes how sharing the story of the land and the journey of the community are intrinsic components of tribal brownfields projects.
