Join us for the 2023 Brownfield Grant-writing Training Webinar Series: It’s Never Too Early To Start! designed to determine your readiness for an EPA Brownfields Multipurpose, Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund, or Cleanup (MARC) Grant followed by guidance to prepare you for the next competition.
Webinars were every Thursday for 6 weeks from April 20, 2023 to May 25, 2023. Each webinar was roughly 2 hours, including questions and answers.
Webinar 1: Are you Ready for an EPA Grant? How to Build Your Capacity!
Held: Thursday, April 20, 2023
Webinar 1 will provide a brief overview of the Brownfields redevelopment process and hear from a successful EPA Brownfields grantee about his approach to advancing brownfields projects with and without grant funding. We will also explore how ready you are to apply for an EPA Brownfields grant. If you’re not ready, we’ll provide tips on how to fill the capacity gaps and discuss how the EPA TAB program provides resources that will support you throughout the Brownfields redevelopment process from planning to redevelopment.

Webinar 2: MARC Grant Fundamentals and Online Tools
Held: Thursday, April 27, 2023
Webinar 2 will provide an overview of each type of brownfields grant (Multipurpose, Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund, or Cleanup) including eligibility, funding limits, threshold criteria, the state letter and present best practices for procurement and contractor relationships. We’ll also share ideas for creating a project outline and useful tools to help you get started such as TAB EZ, EJ Screen, CJEST, PEER. At the end of this webinar, you’ll understand which grant best meets your needs and initial steps to take to ensure your organization is ready to apply.
Webinar 3: Project Area Description and Plans for Revitalization
Held: Thursday, May 4, 2023
Webinar 3 will begin to set the stage for your grant narrative by talking about the importance of effectively telling your community’s story and how to select your target area(s) and priority site(s). We’ll also discuss why it’s vital to make sure your reuse strategy aligns with existing revitalization plans, as well as the importance of being able to identify additional resources you will need to complete your project well in advance of writing your proposal. By the end of this webinar, you’ll understand what you should begin thinking about and exploring to set yourself up for success on the first section of your proposal!
Webinar 4: Community Need & Community Engagement
Held: Thursday, May 11, 2023
Webinar 4 will discuss how to successfully present your community’s need for brownfield funding and take a deep dive into free online tools (CJEST, EJ Screen, EnviroAtlas) and resources to aid in developing your demographic profile. We will also share ideas to actively engage the community in the Brownfields process and effectively present those efforts in your application. At the end of the webinar, you will have great ideas to demonstrate your community’s need for brownfields funding and ways for engaging and developing partnerships before you start writing your application.
Webinar 5: Budget, Tasks, & Programmatic Capability
Held: Thursday, May 18, 2023
Webinar 5 will briefly review the basic components of these sections and examine how to avoid common mistakes. There will be a focus on resources you can access now to begin assembling the needed information. Previous successful MARC Grant recipients will share their approach to gathering and presenting the data required for these sections.
Webinar 6: Tying it All Together
Held: Thursday, May 25, 2023
Webinar 6 will discuss approaches to setting the stage for a cohesive story and draw upon key ideas and tools from Webinars 1 through 5. A general timeline for information and data gathering for each of the grants will be discussed as well as gathering information for the documents (other than the narrative) needed in the application checklist (FY 2023 guidelines). This webinar will also provide an applicant overview of Grants.gov.
